Vermont Authors Lecture Series: Kathryn Davis

Date: Thursday, July 18, 2019
Time: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Enjoy summer evenings with Vermont authors in an intimate setting. Make a night of it; stop by the café for dinner or drinks, or come from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm for a garden party on the patio or in the gallery, featuring local food and drink pairings. Registration is $12 per lecture or $70 for the entire seven lecture series, of which this is the second.

Kathryn Davis, the senior fiction writer on the faculty of The Writing Program at Washington University and author of eight novels, received high praise for her spellbinding new novel, The Silk Road, in recent reviews in Slate and The New York Times Book Review. The Silk Road begins on a mat in yoga class, deep within a labyrinth on a settlement somewhere in the icy north, under the canny guidance of Jee Moon. When someone fails to arise from corpse pose, the Astronomer, the Archivist, the Botanist, the Keeper, the Topologist, the Geographer, the Iceman, and the Cook remember the paths that brought them there-paths on which they still seem to be traveling. Billed as one of the most original voices in contemporary America, Davis received, among many others, a Kafka Prize for fiction by an American woman and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

After sailing to California as a common seaman and writing his account of the voyage, Two Years Before the Mast, Richard Henry Dana could not forget the brutal floggings he had witnessed aboard ship or the vow he had made to combat injustice. Jeffrey Amestoy, former Vermont Attorney General and Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, tells the story of Dana's unflagging determination to keep that vow in the face of 19th-century America's most exclusive establishment: the Boston society into which he had been born and bred. Identified as "the first full-length biography of Dana in more than half a century," Wes Davis, editor of An Anthology of Modern Irish Poetry, notes that the account "reintroduces readers to one of America's most zealous defenders of freedom and human dignity," a "richly detailed biography of Richard Henry Dana and a snapshot of American life at the end of the age of sail." Carol Bundy of the Wall Street Journal notes, Amestoy "Excellently reveals how Dana wrested from the text of the U.S. Constitution the acknowledgment that the African-American slave, a kind of property as far as the traditional reading went, also had rights."

Staged Reading: Miranda by Bernard Pomerance

Time: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Miranda Premieres in Greensboro Prior to New York City Performances The adult daughter of Shakespeare's Prospero, Miranda, has blocked all memories of her childhood. To help her recall her earlier years, Prospero relates the story of his time in the Americas.

The story unfolds against the backdrop of the Lost Colony and the destruction of the Native American world, as Prospero chronicles his love for the Powhatan princess, Ariel, and their child, Caliban. This staged reading of Miranda, a sequel to Shakespeare's The Tempest, incorporates Greensboro's Abenaki culture as it brings to life our nation's early history in its premiere performance. Community members will have the opportunity to participate in the production; audiences will have an opportunity to offer feedback and engage with the performance prior to its New York City debut. Written by the author of The Elephant Man and produced posthumously, Miranda is a treasure to discover. The reading is presented by Tony-nominated Marla Schaffel, Artist-in-Residence at The Mirror Theater in New York City, and directed by Fichandler and Tony Award nominee Sabra Jones, Artistic Director of The Mirror. Miranda is brought to Vermont by the Greensboro Arts Alliance and Residency, striving to benefit the community of Greensboro by providing year-round cultural and artistic opportunities to the residents of Greensboro and its surrounding areas.
