We offer two classes on our forge at the Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village: one for beginners and one for experienced blacksmiths. In "A Taste of Blacksmithing," you will learn how to start a coal forge, heat steel to a forging temperature and the basics of hammer control. Various tools and techniques will be introduced along the way (including forge welding). The typical participant will go home with a couple hooks, nails and forge welded chain link or two. All materials included. Looking for a forge where you can practice your blacksmithing? You've come to the right place. Join us for our "Open Forge" to work on any of your own projects. If you need it, help will be available from our experienced blacksmiths.

Rug Braiding @ Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village

Join us and learn to rug braid. Create an oval rug (2' x 3') using traditional hand-braiding techniques, appropriate essential tools and new or recycled/washed wool fabrics. Basic hand-sewing skills are essential. Your finished rug will need about 5 square yards of wool.

Celtic Musicians Concert

Jocelyn Pettit and Ellen Gira bring their East Coast tour of Celtic music to the York Street Meeting House on Monday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m.
Fusing together traditional and contemporary influences, Jocelyn (fiddle, step-dancing and vocal) and Ellen (cello) create powerfully uplifting and soulful music. Their instruments weave a rhythmically driving and textured sound, with nuanced fiddle-cello interplay through delicate and fortissimo arrangements.
Supported in part by a grant from the Vermont Arts Council & the National Endowment for the Arts, the Meeting House is located at 153 York Street, Lyndon. It is handicapped-accessible, and masks are encouraged.
From the west coast of Canada, Jocelyn Pettit is a vibrant fiddle player, stepdancer, and singer. With grace and passion, she has delighted audiences and ignited stages across Canada and worldwide, appeared on national television and radio, performed with internationally-renowned groups including The Chieftains, and released two award-nominated albums.
From the east coast of the USA, cellist Ellen Gira has performed throughout North America and the UK. She has collaborated and recorded with numerous acclaimed traditional musicians, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Scottish
Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Restoring Biodiversity: Invasive Plant Management in the NEK

We will see various treatment methods for controlling barberry, honeysuckle and buckthorn, and we will discuss how, when and why to take action.

Natural Dyeing with Wild Plants (adults and high school students)

In this two-day class, students will learn the basic techniques of natural dyeing to gain the confidence to play with the colors available in our own backyards. We will review the amazingly wide range of colors that can be obtained from wild plants easily found in the Northeast Kingdom, and will dye a tote bag with local plants, with the option of altering colors with simple pH modifications.
Instructor: Shari Apotheker. Class fee: $80 (10% discount for Catamount Arts members and high school students)
Parents of students under 18 will need to complete an Enrollment Form after paying for the class.
